"Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenkyiri"...which translates loosely to "It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot (or left behind)."
🇬🇭
Style, culture, and creativity are something that translates across lands, history, and through our african bloodlines. I created these to honor the land and history as we return to the motherland as diasporans each December.
🇬🇭
The base of this design reflects the Ghana flag. Kente cloth originates from Ghana and is the base of the tongue. The tag says 1957, indicative of the year Ghana established indepence from Great Britain. I went with the gum bottom to reflect my skin grounding with the soil once I touch down. The brown braided laces represent our hair and skin, with Gold aglets as a nod to one of Ghanas major exports and its history as "the gold coast". The 2 Adinkra symbols on the toe box are of the Sankofa bird...reaching back for its egg to not get left behind, and the Sankofa heart...spiraling from 2 different paths to connect as 1. Last but not least, the word SANKOFA stitched into the heel. Sankofa is a Twi word from the Akan Tribe of Ghana that loosely translates to, “go back and get it. It encourages learning from the past to inform the future, reaching back to move forward, and lifting as we climb.
